Wareham girl wins in Hyannis pageant
Like most four-year-old girls, Skylar Savoie of West Wareham loves to dance, sing, and play dress-up. Her passion to perform earned her the crown at the Sunburst Beauty Pageant in Hyannis on May 20.
Skylar took home a three-foot trophy and her prized tiara after being named the winner in the four- to six-year-old category.
Skylar competed in nine categories, a combination on-stage contests and portfolio photo submissions. She won in the "environmental photo" submission and placed in the "party wear" and "costume" portions of the competition, qualifying her for the international pageant held in Atlanta, Georgia.
Skylar's parents, Christine and Mark Savoie, say they're thrilled for their daughter.
“We are so proud of her, but [the international competition] is not for us,” Christine explained. “At that level it is a whole different ball game. Internationals is when you see even the youngest contestants wearing make-up, false eye lashes, and spray-on tans.”
The Sunburst Beauty Pageant is an all-natural face pageant. Make-up, hair extensions, and fake tans are not allowed. This is Skylar’s second time competing in the pageant and her second time qualifying for internationals.
Skylar began competing last year at age two after Christine signed her up for preliminaries on a whim. Skylar won first runner-up in her division. Christine said Skylar enjoyed the experience so much they decided to compete again this year.
“It has been a great experience and confidence-builder for her,” Christine said. “For Skylar, it's all about playing dress-up and she loves being able to go on stage. She wants to do it against next year.”
Skylar's entry in the pageant was sponsored by a number of local businesses, including Best Friends Preschool, Kaleidoscope Dance, Cranberry Cottage, Minerva's Pizzeria, Charlie's Place, Sam's Gas, and the Liquor Locker.
