Higinio Zaragoza, Sr., 91

Higinio Zaragoza, Sr., 91, of West Wareham died May 23 at his home. He was the husband of the late Lucille A. (Correia) Zaragoza.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Andrea (Rodriguez-Reyes) and Francisco Zaragoza.

Mr. Zaragoza came to the United States in 1951. He worked for Ellis D. Atwood picking cranberries seasonally. He served as translator and mentor for many of the non-English speaking employees. He then worked as locomotive engineer for Edaville Railroad for 36 years. After his retirement, he worked part time for Roby’s Propane Gas for 12 years.

He was a parishioner at St. Patrick’s Church in Wareham and enjoyed baseball and gardening.

Survivors include his children, Consuelo M. Villella of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Higinio A. Zaragoza, Jr. of Onset, Luis R. Zaragoza, and Rosalinda Zaragoza both of West Wareham, Andrea L. Martin, and Margarita Zaragoza both of Wareham, and Maria Zaragoza of Onset; his brother, Jose Zaragoza of Puerto Rico; 18 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, the late Pilar Zaragoza and Juan Zaragoza.

His funeral will be from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Route 28), Wareham on Saturday, May 26, at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, High St., Wareham at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Visiting hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
