A Wareham man was indicted on May 25 on charges that he assaulted a woman, left her for dead, and then set fire to an abandoned building at 36 Restful Lane in East Wareham.

The Wareham Fire Department and surrounding towns responded to 911 calls for fire back on March 29.

The home was completely destroyed and investigators later determined the fire to be arson. A woman who had been trapped inside by fire was also located after her escape.

Mondel Johnson, 40, of East Wareham, was arrested in Fall River by Wareham Police detectives, Massachusetts State Police and police officers from the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, Fall River and New Bedford on April 5.

Johnson will be indicted on two counts of armed assault with the intent to murder, arson of a dwelling, two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and malicious damage to property.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced Johnson will be arraigned on the charges in Brockton Superior Court at a later date.
