Wareham High School seniors received more than $400,000 worth of scholarships from individuals, groups and organizations Thursday night.

Principal Scott Palladino said it was well deserved.

“By far, this is one of the most academically competitive senior classes we have ever had graduate,” said Palladino. “In many cases, one-tenth of a percentage point separated students.”

Scholarships and awards for academic achievement, leadership, character and more were handed out during the Senior Academic Awards Ceremony.

Palladino noted this year the amount of scholarships awarded was record-breaking. In past years, students received a total of roughly $200,000.

“This is the largest amount of local scholarships ever given to one class at Wareham High School,” said Palladino.

School Committee Chair Joyce Bacchiocchi said the generosity was greatly appreciated.

“This is a wonderful night and we’re so fortunate to have so many scholarships awarded,” she said. “Everyone at the school is grateful.”

The night also honored the 10 students with the highest grades, including Valedictorian Madison Hough, who will be attending Brown University, and Salutatorian Jarred Bettencourt, who will be attending the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
