East Wareham man charged with leading Vermont, Massachusetts State Police on high-speed chase

A 36-year-old East Wareham man led multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase through Vermont and Massachusetts on Tuesday, June 26, which ended when the driver jumped out of the car while it was still in motion.

The pursuit began on I-91 in Putney, Vermont when Bret Cappola was spotted driving erratically in the highway’s southbound lane, according to a press release from Vermont State Police. Cappola fled when officers approached, starting the chase which featured speeds up to 105 mph and the involvement of six police agencies. According to police, Cappola was weaving in and out of traffic and passing cars in the breakdown lane at times.

Cappola got off the highway at Exit 1 in Brattleboro, Vermont. He reportedly drove down Route 5 into Bernardston, Massachusetts. The chase continued from there through Greenfield, Massachusetts before Cappola got back on I-91.

While driving through Deerfield, Massachusetts, police said Cappola slowed down to 20 mph and dove out of the passenger side of his car. He then ran for the woods.

According to police, Cappola’s car continued on and struck the side of Vermont State Police cruiser causing severe damage.

Cappola has been charged with operating a stolen motor vehicle, operating under the influence and numerous moving violations according to Vermont State Police. Cappola faces similar charges in Massachusetts.

He is being held in the Franklin County House of Correction in Greenfield on $5,000 cash bail.
