Owners of new Swifts Beach ice cream shop look to liven up community
Nestled in the heart of the Swifts Beach neighborhood, new ice cream parlor Tone’s Cones is more about brightening up the community than turning a profit.
“This place needed something. Coming down here as a kid there was so much to do. ... There were block parties, dances on the beach... [Now] there are not many draws," said Tone's Cones owner Tony Petrucci. "I figured we need a little ice cream."
Petrucci and his wife Kara, who also operate Swifts Beach Realty, opened Tone’s Cones in June. The Petruccis live in Raynham year-round and are summer residents of Swifts Beach.
Petrucci said he has a deep connection with the community, having summered in Wareham as a child.
“Now we bring our children here. We wanted to make it a fun place for our kids and our neighbors,” he said. “We’re not about competing with anyone. We just want people in the community to come get an ice cream.”
With temperatures pushing 80 degrees on July 15, Petrucci appeared to have gotten what he wanted. Neighborhood children lined up to cool off with a sweet treat from the shop.
“It’s fun to just walk over here. It makes it better than last summer,” said 11-year-old Jaclyn Keene, whose family rents a summer home down the street from Tone’s Cones.
Described by Petrucci as a “low-key” business, Tone’s Cones is operated out of a mobile unit next to Swifts Beach Realty. The couple has operated the real estate agency for the part three years.
This is the couple's first time managing an ice cream shop, or any other eatery for that matter. Petrucci said the community’s response so far is keeping him optimistic about the venture.
“We jumped in,” he said. “Neighbors have been receptive. We’ll see how it goes.”
Located at 169 Swifts Beach Road, Tone’s Cones offers milkshakes, frozen yogurt, and 17 flavors of ice cream. The shop also offers sugar-free options. It is open Monday through Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
