Selectmen gave members of the School Committee the OK on Tuesday night to apply for a $225,000 grant from the Community Preservation Committee to resurface and repair the Anderson track at Wareham Middle School.

In addition to school sports, the Anderson track serves as the host location for several major events in town such as the Wareham-Plymouth Relay for Life. In 2017, an estimated 40,000 people came to the track to see the Vietnam Moving Wall, a replica of the famous war memorial located in Washington D.C.

“This track serves our community in a variety of ways and should be maintained,” said School Committee Chair Joyce Bacchiocchi.

Each year, several organizations requests money for projects through the Community Preservation Act in four categories: open space, historic preservation, affordable housing and recreation. The money is raised through a 3 percent surcharge on property tax bills.

Spending these funds must be approved by voters at Town Meeting.

In addition to resurfacing the track, Bacchiocchi said the grant would allow the committee to install a new fence and improve storage at the track for Wareham’s sports teams.
