Updated Tuesday: Woman cited in accident with Marion Fire Chief
A Brockton woman was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle in a Sunday, September 18 Marion Road crash involving Marion Fire Chief Thomas Joyce.
Joyce was driving his department-issued SUV and responding to reports of a fire at the Marion Fire Department's Spring Street station when he and Joanne Pyne, who is in her 70s, were involved in an accident. The crash occurred just before 8 p.m. near the Briarwood Beach neighborhood.
Pyne, who was driving a white SUV, was taken to Tobey Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Wareham Police Lieutenant Kevin Walsh. She was cited for failure to pull to the right of the roadway and stop for an emergency vehicle, Walsh said. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
The fire at the Marion Fire Department was likely caused by an outdoor floodlight, but remains under investigation, according to a Marion Fire Department press release. Firefighters got the fire under control quickly and were able to contain it in the upstairs attic area at the front of the building.
Joyce was the long-time police chief in Wareham before he retired in June 2009. Current Police Chief Richard Stanley served on an interim basis following Joyce's retirement. Stanley was appointed to the full-time position in April.
Wareham Police and Wareham Fire responded to the crash scene. The Wareham, Mattapoisett and Rochester Fire Departments responded to the scene of the fire.
