The Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford/Wareham will honor Onset resident Dick Wheeler on November 3, the 20th anniversary of his 1,200-mile kayak trip from Newfoundland to Cape Cod to raise awareness about extinction.

Wheeler's trip followed the migratory path of the great auk, a bird humans drove to extinction in the 1800s.

The event will be held at the Marion Music Hall, located at 164 Front Street in Marion. Attendees will view the 1994 NOVA film, "Haunted Cry of a Long Gone Bird," which chronicled the journey. Wheeler will share behind-the-scenes stories that did not appear in the film.
