Wareham track athletes finish season with speed
The Wareham High School track team ended its winter season with a sprint to the finish line, as many of the athletes broke personal records, and earned medals in the final two meets of the season.
According to Coach Chris Gardner, 17 out of 24 athletes achieved personal bests at the South Coast Conference Championships on Feb. 8 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Several athletes took home medals at this meet as well. Izak Salim placed third in the 600 meter dash and second in the long jump, Adreanna Dillen placed third in the 2 mile, Natalia Moulding placed third in the 600, Marina Cadena placed fourth in the shot put, Grace Brogioli placed fifth in the 1000 meter race, and Joseph Pearle placed sixth in the long jump. The 4 x 200 ladies relay team of Nicole Monteiro, Maddy Murphy, Cadena and Lexy Lynch placed sixth, and the 4 x 200 boys relay team of Salim, Gabe Silva, Pearle and Kevin DeCollibus placed fifth. The 4 x 400 ladies relay team of Brogioli, Laura Clements, Dillen and Moulding placed fifth, and the 4 x 400 boys relay team of Arman Araujo, Silva, Darius Agee and Ben Brogioli placed sixth.
Wareham athletes returned to the Reggie Lewis Center on Feb.16 for the Division 5 Championships. Once again, Wareham’s relay teams performed well. The girls 4 x 400 relay team of Lexy Lynch, Grace Brogioli, Marina Cadena and Adreanna Dillen ran a season best of 4:41.45, placing 19th. The boys 4 x 400 relay team of Darius Agee, Gabe Silva, Ben Brogioli and Kevin DeCollibus also ran a season best of 3:51.55, placing 17th. The boys 4 x 200 relay team of Izak Salim, Gabe Silva, Rakeem Jackson and Kevin DeCollibus placed 12th.
Adreanna Dillen set a school record in the mile, with a time of 5:43.40, which was enough to win her heat, and place 12th overall.
Salim placed 14th in the long jump with a jump of 18' 9" and earned a 6th place medal in the 600 with a personal best time of 1:27.57.
While Gardner was proud of the way his athletes performed in the final two meets, the season didn’t come without its struggles.
The boys team finished with an overall record of 0-5, and the girls with a record of 2-3.
Gardner said that the losing records were not an indication of a lack of talent, or work ethic, but simply not having enough depth on the roster.
He explained that with a total of 35 athletes, he was only able to place one athlete in an event, where other teams might have three or four, making it extremely difficult for his competitors to win on points.
Gardner said that the spring season is just three weeks away, and that his athletes are eager to get back on the track. “I have to force them to rest,” he said.
