'Feel the Music' begins second season of free concerts
When he was a teenager, Wareham Community Television member Bruce Gannon watched "The Midnight Special," a musical variety show from the 1970s and early 1980s, which aired Fridays after "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."
Gannon credits the show with inspiring own weekly concert series, "Feel the Music," which broadcasts live from the Dudley L. Brown VFW in Onset on Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
"I knew I wanted to do something like that," said Gannon, who serves as the show's producer.
In the winter of 2009, Gannon put on a "battle of the bands" competition through the community television station, which he said was also an inspiration for the show.
"Feel the Music" launched in November 2010. The first season, which ended in March, was a success, and thus "Feel the Music" began its second series of concerts last month.
Gannon said that he started planning for this season the day after the first season ended.
"It takes a long time to do it," he said about the process of looking for bands and listening to samples of their music. Gannon finds bands through networking with his vast number of Facebook friends and completes a casting call.
Most of the acts are classified as blues, jazz, Americana, bluegrass, or some sort of rock 'n' roll. Gannon said he stays away from certain genres like hip-hop, rap, and certain styles of rock because they aren't his taste.
This season will complete in May of 2012. The season was extended because many musicians and bands were interested in participating, Gannon said.
The fall to late-spring schedule is Gannon's way of bringing music to Wareham after the Onset Summer of Love concert series ends its run.
"There's really nothing going on in the wintertime," he said.
None of the bands who perform as part of "Feel the Music" are paid, so Gannon said he hopes to at least give the musicians a live audience to play for - something that was challenging for the series' first season.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend "Feel the Music" shows, which begin at 8 p.m. at the Dudley L. Brown VFW, located on Gibbs Ball Park Road in Onset.
Can't make the performances? The concerts air live on WCTV on Comcast channel 9, Verizon channel 30, and online at www.warehamtv.org (Live Stream 2).
