Vikings look to playoffs as Lexie Silvia hits 1,000th point
With one milestone out of the way, Wareham High School senior guard Lexie Silvia is focusing on the next ones: edging closer to the school's all-time scoring record for basketball and helping her team get to the playoffs.
Silvia got her 1,000th point on a free-throw in the first quarter of home game against Dighton-Rehoboth on Friday, Dec. 23. The Vikings went on to win 54-45.
"It felt good that it was a home game, Christmas break," said Silvia, who needed just four points going into the game to hit the milestone. "Everyone's back from [college] and everyone's there. It was nice to see the support and have the town come out."
Fans in the stands held signs cheering on Silvia, but the focus wasn't on her 1,000th point.
"At the beginning of the game, we were just saying, 'Let's go out there and worry about the win,'" she said.
For the rest of her final season as a Viking, Silvia will inch closer to the school's 1,577 point scoring record.
"That's going to be a push," Silvia said. "I'm just trying to worry about placing and making it to the playoffs."
This year is a tough one, said Coach Robert Rojik. The team lacks height and its roster is only about 16 players long. But the players make up for that in hard work, he said.
"We're asking these kids to play a lot of minutes. We like to run and press the ball," he explained, adding: "We're going to battle. We're going to make the tournaments."
With sophomore players learning the ropes, Rojik said that this year is "just a continuation" of the team's successful season last year. The ladies made it to the South Division 3 quarterfinals.
Silvia shares his confidence.
"We can do it," Silvia said. "We're short on numbers, but we have a strong team. We just have to stay in shape."
Rojik said Silvia is a great help.
"She's a great kid. ... She can take the ball to the hoop. She can get the three[-point shot]," he said, pointing out that he coached Silvia's mother in the 1980s and noting that the two share many of the same traits. "It's not just about her. She's looking for people coming down the floor in a fast break."
Friday's game also marked a milestone for Rojik: he garnered his 300th win.
