Visitors want maps? Chamber will print maps

Jan 25, 2012

Out with the guidebook, in with the map.

Even in this age of smart phones, Mapquest.com, and the GPS, Marie Oliva of the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce says the "Number 1 request at all of our visitor centers" is for a paper map.

So . . . the Chamber president told members assembled at the group's annual meeting on Jan. 25, the Chamber will this year publish a map of the region. The maps will be distributed free of charge at visitor centers here and around the state. The new map, with advertising on the reverse side, will take the place of the Chamber's annual book-format guide book.

"We try to mix things up and do something different," Oliva explained.

The Chamber, based in Buzzards Bay, serves the business communities of Wareham and other towns bordering the canal. In other annual meeting business, the group:

-- Welcomed new Chairman Tracy McCarthy of Tracy McCarthy Insurance Solutions of Buzzards Bay. She succeeds Cynthia Parola of Decas Real Estate Trust of Wareham.

-- Honored Hy-Line Cruises of Hyannis as its Business of the Year. The family business was founded in 1962 with one boat used to show tourists a waterside view of the Kennedy compound. It today operates eight boats, including a canal cruises boat out of Onset. In accepting the award for his family's company, Philip Scudder talked of retiring that very first boat, shortly after it turned 100 years old.
