Hearings continued for solar over cranberry bogs, Fearing Hill solar

Aug 18, 2021

The solar farm proposed to operate over 28 acres of active cranberry bogs on North Carver Road is still awaiting Conservation Commisssion approval, following an Aug. 18 meeting.

BE RE LLC’s proposal has already been approved by Wareham’s Planning Board and Carver’s Planning Board and Conservation Commission — the farm straddles the two towns.

The solar farm, which will involve construction within water and vegetative wetlands and the waterfront area of the Weweantic River, requires Conservation Commission approval before work can begin.

At the Aug. 18 Conservation Commission meeting, Conservation Administrator Dave Pichette explained that the hearing had been continued because additional information was needed in the applicant’s “alternatives analysis.” Pichette said the applicant submitted additional materials for the analysis and he had been going back and forth with the applicant with further comments on the materials.

“Based on what I’ve seen thus far, [...] in my opinion, the alternatives analysis issue still is not addressed. I still believe it’s inadequate,” Pichette told the board.

Representatives from the project attended the meeting and advocated for the approval of the project.

During the meeting, Wareham resident Annie Hayes praised the board for being conscientious and said the project could “open the floodgates” for allowing solar panels over cranberry bogs.

The hearing was continued until Sept. 1 to allow the commission time to review newly submitted materials.

A public hearing for the Fearing Hill Solar array was also continued until Sept. 1 after no discussion. The applicant was not in attendance at the Aug. 18 meeting.
