From Russia with fur: Fluffing up the Chief

Mar 9, 2010

He's just 15-months old, but as Main Street pet groomer Jackie Peckham quickly found out, Chief Blackberry Rage, a Black Russian Terrier, is 110 pounds of fur... and fun.

Chief's owners, Bill and Karol Madden of Mattapoisett, asked Peckham to get Chief ready for the Rhode Island Pet Show, held last weekend in Providence.

"I didn't even know the breed existed until [Chief] showed up at my house one day," Bill Madden said. Developed by the Russian Red Army as a guard dog, Black Russian Terriers are a mix of many breeds, among them Airedale Terriers, Giant Schnauzers and Newfoundlands. They are courageous and confident, Madden said.

Peckham, owner of Jacks Are Wild on Main Street, had never performed a show groom on a Black Russian Terrier before. With many laughs and a lot of love, she bathed, brushed, meticulously trimmed, and fluffed Chief to American Kennel Club standards. He participated in the RARE Dog Show, finishing 4th place in the working-dog class.
