Wareham 15 and under basketball team wins a state-wide championship
Hey there Wareham basketball fans, there is another team in addition to Wareham High School boys varsity basketball that is playing on the championship level.
The Wareham-based, 15-and-under basketball team, "Basketball School" became state champions, winning the Zero Gravity Massachusetts State Championship tournament held in Bridgewater on May 19 and 20.
"Basketball School" is an age 15-and-under club basketball team with around half of the players from the Wareham area. It is coached by Colbey Santos, also an assistant coach for the Wareham boys varsity basketball team.
The team recently held a fundraiser at the Wareham Intermediate Courts on May 6 to help collect money needed to enter in the Zero Gravity tournament.
"I wanted to thank ... the community for the fundraiser and support without [which] we would not have been able to attend this event," Santos said in a statement.
The team has been invited to the Zero Gravity National Finals, scheduled for June 15 to 17 at various locations in Massachusetts, Santos said.
Zero Gravity is an event-management company that conducts basketball tournaments, according to Chief Executive Officer Greg Kristof. Just under 100 teams participated in last weekend's tournament, Kristof said.
The 15-and-under "Basketball School" team won its first game on Saturday by 25 points, said Santos. The second game saw a 3-point come-back win by Basketball School after being down by 13 points with only 8 minutes left in the game, Santos said.
The second game saw great defense by players Mathieu Griggs and Taekwon Phillips to earn an 8-point win.
Sunday's championship game was a rematch between Basketball School and the Boston Spartans, who defeated Basketball School by 20 points and by 15 points earlier in the year, Santos said.
During the championship match-up, Mark Pierrot helped keep Basketball School ahead with 31 points scored, said Santos, giving the team the state championship title by 1 point.
