Former Mr. Chris Hair Salon building eyed for Taunton Federal Credit Union branch
Taunton Federal Credit Union plans to build a full-service branch at 2512 Cranberry Highway, a property formerly occupied by the Mr. Chris Hair Salon.
Founded in 1947, Taunton Federal Credit Union now services Bristol, Plymouth and Barnstable Counties in Massachusetts as well as most of Rhode Island.
The company came to the South Coast in 2023 through a merger with the Marion-based Commonwealth Utilities Federal Credit Union.
As the merger took effect, the company already planned to relocate its new Marion branch to Wareham. The Marion location lacked drive-up services or an ATM, and so was “somewhat deficient,” said Taunton Federal Credit Union President and CEO Nelson Tavares.
The building which housed the Mr. Chris Hair Salon, a 40-year institution in the community, became available last year. Barber and stylist Chris Gabriel closed the doors and moved to rental space at Locks Unlimited, 137 Main Street.
That move opened the door for Taunton Federal Credit Union. The company bought the property for $1 million in September 2023.
Taunton Federal Credit Union is working to develop the space in anticipation of an early 2025 opening, according to a statement from the company. The new branch is expected to be a full-service location with drive-through lanes and a drive-up ATM.
“The Credit Union is excited to bring a state of the art banking facility to the Wareham area,” said Tavares. “We look forward to not only being a financial resource for consumers and businesses in the area, but also engaging with the local community.”
