Former Wareham Gatemen pitcher invited to Red Sox training camp

Sean Newcomb, a former Wareham Gatemen pitcher and first round major league baseball draft pick, has been invited to the Boston Red Sox spring training camp that begins in February.

Newcomb, 31, joined the Gatemen in 2012, winning the championship with the team that year. He also played in Wareham for the 2013 season.  

The left-hander was signed to a minor league deal with the Red Sox and invited to the major league camp, the team announced Jan. 17.

The Los Angeles Angels selected Newcomb as the 15th pick of the first round draft in 2014. 

Newcomb has a 4.51 earned run average with 438 strikeouts in 175 major league games, including 60 starts. He has played with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 to 2022, Chicago Cubs in 2022 and the Oakland Athletics in 2023 to 2024.

Newcomb also played for Middleboro High School and earned a .46 run average as a senior. He notched 110 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched.
