Robert J. Barry, 94, of Onset, formerly of Brockton, passed away Feb. 11, surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, after a long and prosperous life. He was the husband of the late Marian L. (Anania) Barry and the son of the late Richard and Mary (Grimes) Barry.

He was born and raised in Brockton, where he was married and raised a family. He spent summers in Onset and moved there permanently with his family in 1977. Mr. Barry was a Lt. Commander in the Navy, and had 8 years of active service. He served in the American and European Theatre's during WWII. He then served in the Navy Reserves until he earned his retirement.

He graduated from Brockton High School and the College of the Holy Cross.

Mr. Barry was an English teacher in the Wareham schools for many years before retiring in his 80s. Previously, he owned and operated Empire White Star Laundry in Brockton, and continued operating his laundry business on the Cape.

A devoted husband, father and friend, Bob was constantly sacrificing for the good of others. A humble man, he was hardworking, patient, and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Bob was very active in his community. He was elected Wareham Town Assessor for 10 years, was an Onset Water Commissioner, a member the Onset Protective League, on the Wareham Marine Resource Commission, the Shellfish Advisory Commission, and the Wareham Housing Authority.

In 2004, he was named “Person of the Year” by the Onset Protective League. Along with being active in the community, Bob enjoyed swimming and sailing, as well as vacationing to Florida, where as a youth, he was a lifeguard and was recognized for saving several lives.

Survivors include his children, Elizabeth E. Caradimos of Onset, Robert Barry and his wife, Nancy, of Buzzards Bay, Patricia A. Barry and her husband, Daniel, of Plymouth, and James M. Barry and his wife, Sheila, of Onset; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
