It takes a village to bring the fireworks to Onset

Apr 30, 2013

The Onset-Wareham Fireworks Committee has kicked off its fundraising efforts for the annual July fireworks display, held in Onset.

Organizers say that donations are low as of yet, and the crew must raise $20,000 for the show.

"Please tell your friends, neighbors, and businesses you deal with to donate now. No amount is too small," the committee said in a statement. "The fireworks bring our residents together, tourism for our businesses, and revenue to our town."

Business owners are invited to be a "headline sponsor" or to purchase a sponsorship package.

There are also various fundraising events upcoming.

On Sunday, May 19, Wareham resident Howie Smith will have his antique 1932 Maxim pumper firetruck at Walmart and Stop & Shop on Cranberry Highway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Onlookers will be encouraged to fill a boot with donations for the fireworks.

Donations are currently being accepted for the committee's upcoming silent auction and raffle fundraiser, scheduled for June 6 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mezza Luna Restaurant, 253 Main Street, Buzzards Bay. The deadline for donations is Friday, May 24. Tickets cost $10 and include complimentary hors d'oeuvres.

In 2007, Wareham did not have the fireworks due to lack of funds and commitment. In the spring of 2008, the Onset Bay Association, Wareham Village Association, Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce, and the Town of Wareham collaborated and formed a committee to bring them back.

"For five years, we did just that!" the committee members said. "Between your generosity and our dedicated committee, we pulled it off."

And the committee wants to ensure it can keep the show going.

Donations by check can be sent to the Wareham Fireworks Fund, P.O. Box 799, Onset, Ma 02558. If you would like to be a sponsor or donate to the auction or raffle, leave a message for Jackie at 508-295-7870 or 508-801-9175, or Mary Lou at 508-273-6364 or 508-295-7072.
