Baby Canada geese lose mom, get help from town workers

Jun 3, 2013

Two baby Canada geese got some help from town workers on Sunday, June 2, after the little guys became separated from their mother.

Animal Control Officer Joe Singleton picked up the babies after Harbormaster Department staff found them wandering Onset Beach and nearby docks. As a precaution, Singleton brought the geese to the Cape Wildlife Center in Barnstable to be checked out by a veterinarian.

Canada geese tend to nest on Wickets Island in Onset Bay. The goose rescuers speculated that high winds on Saturday into Sunday morning may have separated the babies from their mom.

Deborah Millman, director of the Cape Wildlife Center, says the geese are doing fine.

"They're doing very well," she said. "They seem to be in good health."

Great news for the geese!

Now, the Cape Wildlife Center and the Harbormaster Department are looking for a pond for them to call "home." The only requirement is that the pond already has a family or families of Canada geese, so the pair can find a sort of adoptive family.

"We can take care of them here, but it would be optimal if they can find another flock," said Millman, noting: "Canada geese are real welcoming to other Canada geese."
