Bikers turn out in Onset for a great cause

May 5, 2014

More than 140 bikers and scores of other community members turned out for the fifth Annual Jacob's Motorcycle Run and Benefit on Saturday at Stevie B's in Onset.

"Every year it gets bigger and a little better," said Joanne Beranger, mother of 7-year-old Jacob Westgate, for whom the benefit is held.

Westgate was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, which is a rare type of childhood cancer that forms in the nerve tissue, on his third birthday. Every year since, Steve Beranger, who is Westgate's uncle and owner of Stevie B's Onset Sports Resort, has held a fundraiser for him.

"We try to do something every year to help him out--there is only so much they can do on their own," Beranger said.

Joanne said the fundraiser helps pay for things such as Jacob's frequent trips to New York for treatment and other medical costs that insurance doesn't cover.

The event had food, live music from recording artist Scott Hooper and raffle prizes such as Red Sox and Hunter Hayes tickets, a new barbecue and a big screen TV. Steve Beranger's daughter, Brianna, also ran a hot dog stand for Last Hope K9 Rescue, a Massachusetts-based rescue that has saved thousands of dogs from being euthanized at kill shelters.

This year saw the event's biggest turnout thanks in part to the warm, sunny day on May 3. The bikers rolled out of Stevie B's in the morning and went to Steve Beranger's house in West Wareham for a meal before heading out on an hour-and-a-half ride around the South Coast.

"It's a great thing they do," said Joanne. "[Jacob] loves it when he sees all the motorcycles out on the road."
