Brewer Onset Bay Marina receives OK for 18,000-gallon fuel tank

A proposed upgrade at an Onset marina took a step forward Tuesday when Selectmen granted a license allowing the installation of an 18,000-gallon above-ground fuel tank.

On Tuesday, Greg Glavin, manager of Brewer Onset Bay Marina, located at 3 Green St., appeared before board members with the request. He noted the project already received approval from the Conservation Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Onset Fire Department.

At a previous public hearing in May, neighbors aired concerns regarding the tanks, which will replace three, 6,000 gallon underground ones at the site. Glavin said safety questions had been answered and the tank’s initial location on the property was moved in deference to abutters concerned about the view.

Back in May, Mark Smith, the project’s engineer, said it was is in line with similar efforts being undertaken by marinas across the country to replace underground tanks.

“Overall, we think this is pretty significant environmental upgrade,” said Smith then.

The new tank will be double-walled and have leak sensors that will alert fire officials in the event of a problem, he noted.

Selectmen unanimously approved the tank with minimal discussion.
