Busy at the bandshell: Onset Music Festival to showcase local talent

Jul 20, 2015

While Onset attracts regional and national acts to some of its summer concerts, it's the homegrown artists who will be showcased at the new Onset Music Festival at the bandshell on Saturday, July 25.

"I'm trying to show how many great local acts there are," said Grace Morrison, the festival organizer who will also perform at the concert.

Morrison said after attending some of the concerts at the bandshell last summer, such as the Onset Beach Jazz Festival and the Summer of Love Music Series, she felt the need to add to the music in town.

"I just want to see the bandshell used more," Morrison said.

It's been a summer of resurgence at the bandshell, with this new festival and the return of the Thursday night movie nights, in addition to the big concerts such as the Jazz and Blues Festivals.

The lineup consists of six local acts, all performing for roughly an hour.

Carlin Tripp at noon; Angry Ginger at 1 p.m.; The Whiskey Boys at 2 p.m., Grace Morrison at 3 p.m.; Huxster at 4 p.m. and the Brian Sances Band at 5 p.m.

"I got all the people I really like,” Morrison said. “Essentially everyone I wanted to get can come.”

The concert will be in memory of her friend Ryan Levangie, a Wareham High School Class of 2003 graduate who passed away at the age of 29 last July, after a motorcycle accident.

The concert is free, but Morrison is asking for donations that will benefit the Wareham Junior Basketball Association and the Spinney branch of the Wareham Library in Levangie's memory.

“He was such a vibrant kid. He was supportive of his friends and he loved his town,” Morrison said.

In addition, Levangie's mother will also be unveiling a bench dedicated to Ryan on the Onset Pier that morning, and the Spinney branch will be dedicating a plaque in his name at the library, so his life will be celebrated all day long.

The Onset Music Festival takes place from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday July 25 at the Onset bandshell. For more information visit them on Facebook.
