Canine cop apprehends fleeing subject
What started as a routine traffic stop Monday evening turned into something of a chase when Wareham Police K-9 officer Rolf was called upon to catch a rapidly fleeing suspect.
Officer Michael Phinney had pulled over the car in which 24-year-old Onset resident John Filkins was a passenger, when Filkins allegedly sprang from the sedan and took off on foot. Filkins was facing arrest for an outstanding default warrant for failure to appear at an earlier court date.
After shouting at the suspect to stop several times, the Phinney released Rolf, who took off after Filkins and apprehended him shortly thereafter.
Filkins was cuffed and arrested on charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, as well as for the original default warrant. He was then transported to Tobey Hospital, where he was treated for minor dog bite related injuries. After being treated, he was released back into police custody, and spent the night in town lock-up.
Filkins was arraigned Tuesday morning in Wareham District Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
