Champs Animal Shelter looking for donations after car accident

Dec 1, 2015

Champs Animal Shelter is looking for donations for a new van, following an accident Monday that left the shelter without transportation, according to the shelter.

Shelter co-owner Jack Lachance was driving a duck named Hiccup to the vet Monday, when the rear of his truck was clipped, sending it into the wooded median area. The truck missed hitting trees, but the truck did turn and land on its passenger side before skidding to a stop. Neither Lachance nor Hiccup was hurt, but the shelter said the truck was totaled.

The truck was used for transporting animals, bringing waste to the transfer station, hauling food, shavings, and all sorts of animal supplies needed in running the shelter, which houses about 50 cats, two goats, a rabbit, three lovebirds, two pigeons, a duck and a pig. The privately-run shelter rescues animals who would otherwise be euthanized.

According to the shelter, funds are tight and the staff does not have the money on hand to replace the truck. They said they would appreciate any donations to help replace it.

Donations may be sent to: Champs Animal Shelter, 1057 Main Street, West Wareham 02576.
