Cold temps bring people out on the ice in Wareham
The early ice fishermen get the fish.
Jim Gaudet, Brendan Thomas, and Jake O’Brian, all of Middleboro, were out early on Mill Pond Saturday morning. There, they caught several fish through holes carved out in the ice by their auger, which is a large drill with an oversized bit meant for digging sizeable holes in things.
“We’ve been here since 6 a.m.,” said Gaudet, as he sat by a fire the three lit out near their small camp on the slippery surface.
Cold temps allowed several ice fisherman and others to get out on the ice in Wareham Saturday, as people could be seen from the road out on both Mill Pond and Union Pond.
Gaudet said the three had caught several fish with their flag traps, which are set to trigger flags when fish bite at the baited hooks lowered down into the water through the ice.
“We were getting a ton of ‘em earlier,” he said, naming large mouth bass, perch, striped bass, and pickerel as some of their catches. “Every flag was going off. It was like a synchronized ice show. It was pretty wild. We had a productive morning.”
“It's been pretty fun,” he added. “It’s nice to get out there and do this in the winter.”
