Committee proposes upgrade for Town Hall auditorium, roof
Town Hall could see a new auditorium, as well as a rubber roof.
Community Preservation Committee members discussed the two refurbishments at the monthly preservation meeting Wednesday night.
The auditorium proposal to be brought at April’s Town Meeting will cost $428,580 against the budget, a slight increase from last month’s proposal figure of $417,680. Newly included in the budget will be a clerk of works that will oversee the process and cost of the updates.
Municipal Maintenance Director David Menard discussed refurbishing the auditorium, which included new woodwork, mezzanine seating, drapes and roof installation. He said the hope of this redesign is to draw a wide range of events to Town Hall, as well as utilize the auditorium as a central spot for Town Hall meetings in the future.
The rubber roof proposal for Town Hall will cost $225,000, a rise from the proposed $190,000, and will also include a clerk of works. Specifications for the roofing job have been written out and all that is required is an approval at the Town Meeting.
Though there was some apprehension over including the clerk of works positions in the two budgets, they were ultimately included. Though the positions and the auditorium and roof were initially one whole proposal, committee co-chair Sandy Slavin advocated for a split to ease the monetary burden on the budget.
“I expect some pushback on a proposal of $633,580,” said Slavin.
All in attendance were in agreement, as Menard claimed he could focus better attention on two separate projects.
