Consistency, wins elude Gatemen
Things did not go well for the Gatemen this week. The team has lost four out of the last five games it played and is at the bottom of the Cape Cod League's Western Division with a record of 4-10-0 and only eight points. But they haven't played poorly, just unevenly.
The highlight of the week was Friday night's pitching duel between Brewster Whitecaps' ace Anthony Ranaudo, from Louisiana State University and Gatemen star Matt Barnes, from the University of Connecticut. Ranaudo went 6.2 innings and gave up only one hit and one walk while striking out eight. Barnes ended up going seven innings allowing four hits and one run. He struck out 14 batters. In the end, however, the Whitecaps prevailed 5-3.
In their last ten games, the Gatemen are 2-8... even with the return of hurler Jack Armstrong from Vanderbilt - who evened his record at 1-1 in the team's 5-2 loss to Chatham on Sunday afternoon. (Game two of the scheduled double header was canceled due to fog, the first weather-related cancellation of the season, and a full game will be made up at Chatham on July 9).
Ringer Alex Dickerson from Indiana has also returned and stepped out at the plate, leading the team in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and battering average.
Unfortunately, Max Muncy's bat has cooled off, as he has gone 2-for-16 in the past five games.
It's a long season, however, and things are still in flux. Both Jordan Swagerty, of Arizona State, and Josh Richmond, of University of Louisville, signed Major League contracts and were released by the team, while Nico Rosthenhausler has transitioned from a non-roster invitee to the full roster. Still expected in Wareham are Erik Miller, of Texas Christian University, and Zach Wilson from Arizona State, whose teams were playing in the College World Series. Of course, other players may leave, including the league's leading home-run-hitter George Springer, for Team USA after the July 4 holiday.
