Curtain closes on the Vikings Theater festival run
After weather-related school cancellations and delays pushed back competition dates, students gave it their all on stage in front of dozens of peers, educators and a panel of judges.
Wareham High School competed in the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild's annual theater festival Saturday, March 7. Students will be performed "Whooo Are Youuu?" in front of several area high schools.
As the lights faded and schools were chosen to move on to semi-finals, Wareham was not selected to advance.
Director Joey Ferro said that while his students didn't move on, they put on a show that was the "crowd favorite." Being the last of eight show to perform he said it put students in a tough spot energy-wise.
"The kids definitely kept up the energy," Ferro said. "They entertained so many people and I always say to them that the competition is the last thing I'm concerned with. If you give me your best show that we've ever ran at festival, then I'm happy."
The festival requires schools to stage a one-act play lasting less than 40 minutes and perform in front of a panel of judges. Those competing have five minutes to set up the stage before the performance, adding another layer to the competition.
With a cast of funky characters, the play Wareham chose follows TV host Buck Lucket as he runs around and prepares his show for an appearance from America’s biggest pop star, Baylor Twift.
Students may have not advanced to the semi-finals, but they didn't go home empty handed. Five students received acting awards.
"They shined and that's what it's about at the end of the day," Ferro said.
Delays made the season difficult, interrupting practice times and canceled the home show, which would have given friends and family the opportunity to see the students shine. With a live jazz band, matching costumes and 45-minutes of fun, Ferro plans on bringing the play back one last time.
"We're going to try to do the whole weekend," he said.
Dates are not finalized, but Ferro said plans are to present the show the weekend of Friday, March 20. Information about the upcoming spring musical have yet to be decided and potential plays are being discussed by the students.
