Decorating schedule for Memorial Day announced

May 13, 2016

Members of the Veterans Council have announced a schedule to decorate graves of the fallen with wreaths on Memorial Day. At the group’s meeting on May 12, the council discussed the details of the day and hope to “make it a ceremony that makes people come out and want to watch it.” The schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30 a.m. - Town Green
  • 9 a.m. - Center Cemetery
  • 9:30 a.m. - St. Patrick's Cemetery
  • 10 a.m. - Narrows Bridge
  • 10:30 a.m. - Agawam Cemetery
  • 11 a.m. - Dudley Brown Square
  • 11:30 a.m. - Onset Bluffs Monument
  • Noon - Stonebridge
  • 12:30 p.m. - Town Hall

Right now, the council is looking to bring in veterans to participate and place wreaths on the gravestones.

At the meeting, members agreed that while politicians are invited to the ceremonies, they may not place wreaths.

“That’s a significant honor to be placing the wreaths,” said Chair Bob White. “From my perspective, the point of this is to bring out all the veterans in our community.”

In addition to the wreaths, there will be flag decorating.

On May 26, a group of middle schoolers and members of the council will help decorate. There will be approximately 40 students on each of two buses: one going out to Agawam Cemetery and the other to St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

The invitation to participate in the flag decorating is open to everyone in the community.

“It’s not limited to the kids,” said JROTC and Veterans Council member Tyler Litchfield. “Anyone who wants to be involved could be.”

On Sunday, members made sure each gravestone had a holder for the flags that will be placed.
