Elks and community 'pay it forward' at raffle
The Wareham-New Bedford Lodge of Elks showed the community how to "pay it forward" at a raffle Saturday afternoon.
The Lodge held a "pay it forward" raffle between 1 and 6 p.m. Open to the public, locals could swing buy and purchase raffle tickets for any of 65 prizes, including more than 20 gift cards, labor from local businesses and a range of other donated prizes.
The event was organized by Wareham Elks members Cheryl Washington, Joan Serverson and Karyn Corcoran. Corcoran argues the three are “the most fabulous members of the Elks.”
A service organization, the Elks Lodges is a national organization dedicated to improving communities and bringing community members closer together.
“We do a lot of service, a lot of community service," Serverson said. "We do a lot with the veterans, we inspire scholarships and we are second only to the U.S. government in money we award in scholarships. [We’re] very involved in youth activities."
Earlier that day, the Elks organized a soccer shoot-out at Decas Elementary. They also donate to the Boys and Girls Club and work with the Wareham Police Department.
The Elks declared their pay it forward raffle to be “unlike any other.” The list of locally-donated prizes ranged from car detailing to house cleaning to handyman services.
“Everyone’s donated stuff,” Corcoran said.
Washington said she was satisfied with the turnout. The room was packed when the drawings began a 5 p.m. Although the money raised hasn’t been tallied yet, the Elks estimate more than $1,000 was raised from the raffle proceeds.
All the proceeds from the event will go towards the Elks' General Fund.
