The Wareham Gatemen baseball team is scheduled to start its 2020 season on June 13, but it is still unclear whether the team will have a season at all as the coronavirus continues to make it unsafe for people to gather together.

The Gatemen are one of ten teams in the Cape Cod Baseball League, which consists of collegiate players from around the country who often move in with host families while they compete in the high-level summer league. 

Over the years, many athletes in the Cape Cod Baseball League have gone on to play in Major League Baseball. 

With the fate of the 2020 season unclear, Cape Cod League officials have voted to wait until May 6 to make a final decision on whether or not to hold ball games this summer.

According to the Gatemen’s Vice President Glen Hannington, league officials are “meeting frequently via video conference calls discussing alternative plans should the need arise for the 2020 season.” 

Hannington also said that “two huge events for the community of Wareham” may have to be canceled this summer due to the pandemic. 

The Gatemen were scheduled to host Israel’s olympic baseball team for a game on July 17, but that game is now “likely canceled,” although Hannington said that there is still a small chance that the game will go on as planned. 

The Cape Cod Baseball League All Star Game is scheduled in Wareham for the following week but the fate of that event is also undecided for now. 

Although the league doesn’t charge admission for games, Hannington said that a canceled season could have a “ripple effect” on the various sponsors who advertise with the league.

With much left up in the air, Hannington explained that “we’re all just waiting on the final determination” on how to go forward with the 2020 season.
