Fire Department puts out brush fire near Lukey Park
Several homes were evacuated Sunday night due to a brush fire near Lukey Park and Marion Road according to the Wareham Fire Department.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries, no personal property or other individuals were harmed.
Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Haskell said the fire department received the call at 9:51 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10 and had extinguished the fire and cleared the scene by 12:40 a.m. Nov. 11.
The Wareham Police Department also responded to the scene and evacuated several homes in the vicinity of the brush fire while firefighters put out the flames.
Haskell said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time but explained that the current climate conditions make brush fires more likely.
On Nov. 7 the Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs declared the Southeast region of the state to be in significant drought. Additionally, open burning is banned statewide through January due to dry conditions, according to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.
“We’ve got warm temperatures, low humidity and its bone dry out there, so the recipe is there,” Haskell said.
