A player with the Wareham Gatemen has escaped serious injury after a “scary moment” during the Cape Cod League All-Star Game on Saturday, July 27.

Brendan Summerhill, a centerfield from Arizona, was taken to Falmouth Hospital before he was transferred to Cape Cod Hospital after running into a fence during the game, according to team manager Ryan Smyth.

“Obviously it was a scary moment,” said Smyth.

He said Summerhill was chasing a long drive over his head with runners on base, and he managed to catch it. “His very next step was into a chain link fence,” Smyth said.

Summerhill raised his hand with the ball to show he’d made the catch, after which the team waited for him to get up, Smyth said. When he didn’t, the team responded and got him medical support.

“We were very happy that the serious scenario turned out to not be so serious,” Smyth said.

“I spoke to him and he was in good spirits,” said Gatemen President Glen Hannington. “He knows he has the loving support” of the team, Hannington added.

A post from the Gatemen indicates that Summerhill is resting with his host family.

“Brendan has been not only a tremendous player for the Gatemen all summer, but an incredible teammate and valued member of the organization. He has a bright future and we all look forward to watching it unfold,” read the post.
