Gatemen drop opener 4-2; bats explode in 13-3 win Thursday night
The Wareham Gatemen may not have gotten off to the best start with a loss in Wednesday’s opener, but the team bounced back in a big way Thursday night in Chatham.
After leading early in the road opener on Wednesday, the Gatemen lost 4-2, but the bats came out Thursday as the team scored 10 runs with two outs, which led to a 13-3 win.
In the first game, the Braves scored three runs in the fourth inning and added another in the sixth, and it was enough to beat the Gatemen, who only managed two runs on eight hits.
Andrew Zapata (0-1), who started the game for the Gatemen, took the loss, while Bourne’s Jimmy Herget (1-0) got the win for Bourne.
The loss followed another loss in the Gatemen’s only other game, a 10-3 preseason tilt in Newport to the Gulls of the New England College Baseball League.
“Overall, I thought we were better than we were last Sunday (against Newport),” said Head Coach Cooper Farris. “I guess you could probably tell we worked a bit on some things. We didn’t make any errors.”
Thankfully for the Gatemen, the offense showed up in the Thursday’s game against the Anglers of Chatham. Wareham had 17 hits overall, scoring four runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth on their way to a total of 13 runs.
Left hander Anthony Kay (1-0) took the win in relief for the Gatemen after giving up only one hit over three innings. Nick Fuller started for the Gatemen, giving up three runs (two earned runs) in four innings. Right-hander Michael Wallace (0-1) took the loss for the Anglers.
First baseman and cleanup hitter Nick Halamandaris went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs for the Gatemen, while catcher Keaton Aldridge went 2-for-5 with a home run (1) and three RBIs and a run scored. Center fielder Jake Little also added a home run for Wareham, also his first of the year.
The Gatemen will play their third game in as many nights on Friday against the defending champion Cotuit Kettleers (0-2) at 5 p.m. Brock Hartson will get his first start of the year for Wareham, while Cotuit has yet to name a starting pitcher.
