Girls track and field heats up in the middle of winter
Last month the Lady Vikings track and field team won the small squad division of the South Coast Conference Holiday Relays and placed second overall for the second year in a row.
Leading the way were the first place finishes of the shot put relay team of Lexie Calvin, Rae-lyn Pina and Hunter Thatcher and the sprint medley team of Chayla Ewing, Maddie St. Julien, Ruthie Gonzalez and Paige Fehskens.
For the second time this season the team lost a meet by one point when on Dec. 27 the team fell to Dighton-Rehoboth. The girls also picked up their first win of the season by defeating Diman Regional.
Earning victories in their events were Maddy Koslowsky in the 55 meter hurdles (9.5), Maddie St. Julien in the 600 meter run (1:53.8) and the 300 meter dash (48.4), Paige Fehskens in the 1000 meter run (3:34) and the mile run (6:32.6), Lexie Calvin in the shot put (32' 4") which qualified her for the Division 4 state meet, Taylor Gerbig in the high jump (4' 8") and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Kendal Haley, Brett McSherry, Angela Pearle & Chayla Ewing (4:58).
On Jan. 3 the girls competed at the Small School Freshmen-Sophomore meet in Boston. Chayla Ewing placed sixth in the 55 meter dash (7.83) which qualified her for the Division 4 state meet. Maddy Koslowsky placed third in the 55 meter hurdles (9.45) in only her second meet of the season coming off of a leg injury.
The girls are back in action on Jan. 15 in a triangular meet against Seekonk and Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech.
