It will be a day of raw emotion.

After a long pandemic absence, the Wareham Oyster Festival will return to Main Street for its seventh year on Sunday, May 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Each year, we have bigger and bigger crowds because the word spread about how great regional oysters are,” said festival organizer Nora Bicki. “We are hoping folks remember what a good time they had.”

The biggest challenge the festival faced wasn’t COVID, but the difficulty of finding enough police officers to meet the state-mandated minimum required for such a large event.

“Several other town organizations dealt with the same issue last year,” Bicki said, “but things have improved and we were able to get all the necessary permits this year.”

The shell-ebrations will begin with the Wareham Oyster 5K, kicking off at 10 a.m. Runners, joggers and walkers can register starting at 8:30 a.m. at the fire station, 273 Main St., or register online at tinyurl.com/2eu3endb. All proceeds from the race will go to local youth sports organizations.

This year’s festival will feature new musical acts, new vendors and new food offerings, including samples from the Scarlet Rose Bistro and local businessman Danny Warren. Warren will offer a taste of the oysters and other seafood he plans to serve at the marina, restaurant and event space he is building on Main Street.

There will be 65 arts and crafts vendors, and live music from Wareham native Gil David Correia and his band, the South Coast Jazz Orchestra and the ‘50s rockabilly cover band Daddy-O.

Of course, there will also be plenty of oysters, along with other delicacies from land and sea. When it comes time to wash it all down, there will be more than enough beer and wine.

Free parking is available at Town Hall, 54 Marion Road, with a free shuttle bus regularly running to and from Main Street.
