Incumbents win in low turnout election

Slavin, Swett, Caporiccio and Sweeney win contested races for Selectmen, Schools and Sewer
Apr 8, 2015

In an election that only saw 1,246 of the more than 14,000 registered voters in Wareham, the electorate generally kept the status quo. Alan Slavin, Geoff Swett, Judy Caporiccio and Susan Sweeney were the winners of the contested races for Selectman, School Committee and Sewer Committee seats.

Selectman Chairman Alan Slavin was re-elected to his three-year position, defeating challenger Michael Frates 869 votes to 353.

"It's been a fun year. Chairing is trying at times," Slavin said at the Selectmen meeting Tuesday night. He said if he was to be re-elected (the meeting took place before the polls closed) he looked forward to having more free time to focus on other projects, such as bringing the Commuter Rail to Wareham.

Frates said he was pleased with his campaign but upset with the low voter turnout.

"I'll run for Selectman every year there is an uncontested race," he said.

When asked about the many vacancies on town boards and committees, including the many pending openings on the Finance Committee, Frates said he might consider joining or running for an open seat in town.

The two three-year seats on the School Committee went to Swifts Beach Improvement Association President Judith Caporiccio and incumbent Geoff Swett who garnered 763 and 749 votes respectively. Resident Julianne Cummings finished third with 478 votes.

"I'm grateful," Swett said after the election. "I will work even harder to make education better and less expensive."

"At the same time I hope to market the successes we do have and we can always improve on what we're doing already," he added.

The only contested race for the five-member Board of Sewer Commissioners was for the three-year sewer user seat between Finance Committee member Dominic Cammarano and schoolteacher Susan Sweeney. Sweeney, the relative newcomer, won the election 623 votes to 467.

The other races for the Board of Sewer Commissioners were uncontested. James Giberti was elected to the three-year non-sewer user seat with 944 votes, Donna Bronk was elected to the two-year sewer user seat with 902 votes, Malcolm White was elected to the at-large sewer commissioner seat with 898 votes and Marilyn Jordan was elected to the one-year sewer user seat with 886 votes.
