JBA Summer Basketball League wraps up season, championship game results

The Wareham's Jason J. Andrade Memorial Summer Basketball League (JBA) has wrapped up its season. Here are the results and a recap the championship games!

Division 1 Girls

The championship games kicked off on Tuesday, July 26 with Carolee's Comedy Corner Storm defeating Nana's Ice Cream Parlor Liberty 18-12.

In the first game of the best-of-three series, the Storm got off to a big lead and then held off a frenzied comeback from the previously unbeaten Liberty.

Michaela McDuffy's 8 points led the Storm while both Erica Trask and Sierra Roberge scored 4 points. Anne Marie Luppino added 2 points.

Brianna Williams scored 9 points for the Liberty and Jillian Mello had 3 points.

The game continued on Wednesday, July 27 with Carolee's Comedy Corner Storm defeating Nana's Ice Cream Parlor Liberty 22-13.

The Storm broke out to a 12-0 lead and held off a second straight late-game rally by the Liberty to capture the 2011 Jason J. Andrade Memorial Summer Basketball League Division 1 Girls Championship.

Michaela McDuffy and Sierra Roberge keyed the offense with 10 points apiece. Blossom Roberge scored 2 points and the team's zone defense stifled the Liberty for most of the game.

Brianna Tavares had 6 points to lead the Liberty and Brianna Williams added 4 points. Amber Baker had 2 points. Kiara Tomkinson finished with 1 point.

Division 2 Boys

As one championship game ended, another began. On Wednesday, July 27 the Division 2 Boys Championships kicked off with the CDD Construction Friars defeating Salerno's Function Hall Eagles 47-21.

The Friars took no prisoners as they broke out fast to start the game and rolled to a big win to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Jamual Sims scored a game-high 23 points to lead the team's offense. Damien Perry Jr. scored 10 points and Gaige Madera added 4 points. Nick Perry, John Todd, and Desmond Powell each finished with 2 points.

Elijah McAllister led the Eagles with 9 points and Sonny Fernandes chipped in with 6 points. The trio of Joey Silvia, Seth Andrade, and Justin Lopes had 2 points apiece.

On Friday, July 27 the CDD Construction Friars beat the Salerno's Function Hall Eagles 35-28.

The game was a far closer affair than in game one, but the Friars pulled away late in the game to earn the 2011 Jason J. Andrade Memorial Summer Basketball League Division 2 Boys Championship.

Jamual Sims poured in 18 points to lead the Friars. Nick Perry scored 9 points, and Damien Perry Jr. finished with 8 points.

Sonny Fernandes led the Eagles with 13 points. Elijah McAllister hit for 8 points and Justin Lopes added 6 points. Seth Andrade contributed a free throw.

Division 1 Boys

Team Onujiogu Grizzlies and the J&M Realty Thunder went head-to-head in Game 1 of the The Division 1 Boys Championship on Friday, July 29. Team Onujiogu Grizzlies beat the Thunder 53-39.

Mathieu Griggs scored 14 points to power the Grizzlies to the victory in game 1 of the best of three championship series. Alex Spinner had 13 points and Durell Barros added 12 points. Alberto Sanchez had 6 points while Mason Lopes chipped in with 4 points. Josh Onujiogu and Jovan Thomas each finished with 2 points.

Michael Labonte's 24 points kept the Thunder within striking distance for most of the game. Markiese Tomkinson scored 6 points and Paris Pires added 5 points. Harold Schwarz and Jahmal Silva scored 2 points apiece.

The Division 1 Boys Championship game continued on Saturday, July 30 with game two of the competition. The J&M Realty Thunder came out on top against the Grizzlies, 51-37.

The Thunder, keyed by an opportunistic team defense and 15 points from Jamahl Silva, forced the first decisive game three in JBA winter or summer league history with the victory. Michael Labonte scored 13 points while both Quincy Aosa and Markiese Tomkinson had 8 points. Ashantay Tavares finished with 5 points and Robert Garrity hit for 2 points.

Despite 12 points each from Mathieu Griggs and Durell Barros, the Grizzlies couldn't keep pace with the Thunder attack. Alberto Sanchez scored 8 points. Alex Spinner (3 points) and Isiah Lopes (2 points) also scored in the game.

The Thunder couldn't keep it going for game three on Sunday, July 31. The Grizzlies captured the 2011 Jason J. Andrade Memorial Summer Basketball League Division 1 Boys Championship title, defeating the Thunder 38-37.

Durell Barros scored just 4 points in the game but it was the last foul shot that sealed the deal for the Grizzlies in the championship final.

Mathieu Griggs led the Grizzlies with 17 points and Alberto Sanchez added 11 points. Josh Onujiogu had 4 points and Jovan Thomas hit for 2 points.

The Thunder came up short despite 17 points from Michael Labonte and 6 from Paris Pires. Markiese Tomkinson scored 5 points and Jamahl Silva had 3 points. Ashantay Tavares and Quincy Aosa hit for 2 points apiece.
