Joy to the world: Gospel concert entertains diverse Onset audience
Saturday was a dream come true for Christine Andrews, who saw hundreds of people come to the Onset Band Shell for an afternoon of music, dancing and worship.
The celebration, "Joyful Noise: A Healing for the Soul," was put together by a small committee of congregants at the Foursquare Church in Onset headed by Andrews, who said the idea for a concert came to her in a dream.
"The response has been great. Everything's been running really smoothly," said Andrews Saturday afternoon. "We've had a lot of diversity."
The crowd was populated with people of all ages who saw a wide range of performances from christian rock groups and solo singers to dance groups and hip-hop artists.
"I started in church but I wanted to do something different than singing in the choir," said Dereck Boyd of New Bedford, one of the hip hop artists who performed on stage. He said his cousin, who is also a rapper, had Boyd join him in one of his songs and perform with him at a concert. |After that, he was hooked.
"God gave me the talent so I've got to give it back to him," said Bryce Burke, also of New Bedford, who performed alongside Boyd.
Performers and attendees came from across the South Coast, but there were plenty of locals on hand as well.
Tiffany Sylvia and Melissa Porter of Onset said they didn't know about the concert but were drawn in and decided to stay when passing by.
"We heard all this and we had to come out," said Porter.
"Everything went great. I had a lot of help," said Andrews, who hopes to put make the concert an annual event in Onset.
