ONSET- Lawrence Joseph Whelan, Jr. (“Larry”), a long-time resident of Onset, died peacefully on August 7, 2024 after a short illness.

Larry was born and raised in Brockton by his parents Lawrence and Genevieve Whelan. In his early twenties, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam war. When his father passed away at an early age, he received an honorable discharge from the Army in order to care for his mother.

Larry went on to work for Tilcon Construction for over 25 years and retired in 2001 to spend time with family and friends.

Larry loved living by the water in Onset, trips to Maine, and spending time with friends and neighbors.

Larry was the husband of the late Melissa Drake. He is survived by his son David Whelan of Bridgewater, his daughter Jessica Coulombe of Wellesley and her husband Derek and their children Benjamin, Madeline, and William.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at 11:30 AM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery located at Connery Avenue, Bourne, MA. The service is open to family and friends who came to know Larry over the years. Attendees should plan to arrive at 11:15AM and proceed to the “Funerals Only” section.
