Learn boating safety and navigation for free

Apr 20, 2012

The Wareham Harbormaster Department in conjunction with the Massachusetts Environmental Police will offer a free 2-day boating education course on April 28 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Multi-Service Building at 48 Marion Road.

The course, entitled "Boat Massachusetts," will cover boating and personal safety, rules of navigation, Massachusetts and U.S. Coast Guard boating laws and much more.

Youth between the ages of 12 to 15 that wish to operate a boat alone must obtain a boating safety certificate. Persons aged 16 to 17 must also obtain a certificate in order to operate a jet ski. These operators must show proof they have successfully completed an approved boating safety course if they operate any watercraft powered by a motor.

While specific age groups are required to complete this course, it is highly recommended that all boaters take full advantage a boating safety course.

To date, the Wareham Harbormaster Department has educated more than 250 people through their boating safety education courses.

The course is being offered at no cost but space is limited. To sign up, please contact the Wareham Harbormaster Department at 508-291-3100 ext. 3186 or at harbormaster@wareham.ma.us.

To pre-register for the class, please visit the Massachusetts Environmental Police website at http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/courselist.htm.

Family participation is encouraged.
