Los Angeles labyrinth fills readers with ‘fear’ and ‘uncertainty’

Jan 22, 2024

Wareham Free Library’s Mystery Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 20 to discuss “The Black Echo” by Michael Connelly.

The book, Connelly’s first, introduced Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective Harry Bosch, who would go on to start in 23 more of Connelly’s novels. The book received the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for "Best First Novel" in 1992 when it debuted.

“The Black Echo” refers to the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty felt underground, which was a common experience for Bosch, who, in the Vietnam War, served as a specialized soldier who went into maze tunnels used as barracks and hospitals. Following the war, Bosch joined the LAPD and eventually ends up in the Hollywood Division's homicide bureau. When a fellow “tunnel rat” is found dead, Bosch begins to investigate and suspects his friend’s death might have something to with the bank robbery that occurred in the previous month, in which the thieves utilized a tunnel system.

Meetings are at the library at 59 Marion Road at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month. Copies are available at the library’s circulation desk.
