Martha's Vineyard ends boys season 83-71
The Martha's Vineyard boys basketball team ended Wareham's season, handing the Vikings a 83-71 loss in their South Division 3 quarterfinals game on March 4.
The second-seeded Vineyarders beat the Vikings for the second time in three games this season, and move on to the Division 3 South semifinals against Cardinal Spellman.
In a close, fast-paced game, it came down to the final minutes between two evenly-matched teams. Martha's Vineyard led at the half by one point, but Wareham came back to lead at the end of the third quarter 20-17. The fourth quarter proved decisive, and the Vineyarders controlled the important points at the end.
"It was actually one of our better games of the season," Wareham High coach Kevin Brogioli said after the loss. "It was back and forth the entire game. [Martha's Vineyard] made a couple of shots near the end, and we missed and were forced to foul. And that was the game."
Sophomore Darrien Fernandes once again led the Vikings in scoring with 17 points. He was followed by Aaron Baptiste with 14 (including four 3-pointers) and Sheldon Frye with 11. Randall Jett matched Fernandes with 17 points to lead Martha's Vineyard.
