More than 100 John W. Decas Elementary students, parents, and staff recently participated in the school's Mathletics and Ice Cream Social, which highlighted the importance of math at the elementary school level.

"Mathletes" in grades three to five -- and their parents -- spent time learning math and problem-solving skills.

The kids divided up into teams, and the parents served as referees and coaches. After plugging away at the numbers they were treated to an ice cream and topping buffet.

First place went to the fourth grade team, "The 4 Taco Supreme."
