MCAS scores reported for Wareham School District's Spring 2015
Wareham School District’s MCAS scores for Spring 2015 are in, and, with a few exceptions, they are lower across the board than the state average for each grade level, particularly in reading and English language arts in the lower grades.
The scores are as follows:
Grade 3
For reading, 36 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state average of 60 percent. That broke down into just 2 percent scoring at Advanced, compared with the state average of 11 percent, and 34 percent scoring at Proficient, compared with the state average of 49 percent. Over half the students, at 52 percent, scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 32 percent; and 12 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 9 percent.
For mathematics, 48 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with state averages of 70 percent. Of those, 13 percent scored under Advanced, compared with the state average of 32 percent, and 35 percent scored under Proficient, a much closer score to the state’s average of 39 percent. In Wareham, 29 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 18 percent; and 23 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 11 percent.
Grade 4
For English language arts, 38 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state average of 53 percent. That broke down into 6 percent scoring at Advanced, compared with the state average of 11 percent, and 32 percent scoring at Proficient, compared with the state average of 43 percent. Under Needs Improvement, Wareham’s fourth-graders scored about evenly with the state, at 39 percent in the district, and 33 percent statewide; and 23 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s lower 14 percent.
In mathematics, Wareham fourth-graders fared better, with 40 percent of students scoring at Proficient or Higher, compared with state averages of 47 percent. Of those, 15 percent scored under Advanced, compared with the state average of 19 percent, and 26 percent scored under Proficient, compared with the state’s average of 29 percent. In Wareham, 45 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 40 percent; and 15 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 13 percent.
Grade 5
For English language arts, 60 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state average of 71 percent. That broke down into just 8 percent scoring at Advanced, compared with the state average of 23 percent. However, Wareham scored over the state with 52 percent scoring at Proficient, compared with the state average of 48 percent. In Wareham, 27 percent scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 20 percent; and 13 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 9 percent.
For mathematics, 53 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with state averages of 67 percent. Of those, 17 percent scored under Advanced, compared with the state average of 35 percent, and 36 percent scored under Proficient, a small gap over the state’s average of 32 percent. In Wareham, 24 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 21 percent; and 22 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 12 percent.
For science and technology/engineering, Wareham met the state average at 51 percent scoring at Proficient or Higher. That broke down into 11 percent in Wareham, and 16 percent across the state in Advanced scores, and 39 percent in Wareham and 35 percent across the state in Proficient scores. Under Needs Improvement, Wareham scored 34 percent, compared with the state’s 37 percent; and 15 percent compared with the state’s 13 percent under Warning/Failing.
Grade 6
For English language arts, 49 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state average of 71 percent. That broke down into 11 percent scoring at Advanced, compared with the state average of 19 percent, and 38 percent scoring at Proficient, compared with the state average of 52 percent. In Wareham, 35 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 19 percent; and 16 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 10 percent.
For mathematics, 36 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with state averages of 62 percent. Of those, at 12 percent, scored under Advanced, less than half the state average of 30 percent, and 24 percent scored under Proficient, compared with the state’s average of 32 percent. In Wareham, 33 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 24 percent; and an overwhelming 31 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 14 percent.
Grade 7
For English language arts, 40 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state average of 70 percent. That broke down into just 1 percent scoring at Advanced, compared with the state average of 9 percent, and 48 percent scoring at Proficient, compared with the state average of 60 percent. Wareham students scored at 39 percent under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 23 percent; and 12 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 8 percent.
For mathematics, 29 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with state averages of 51 percent. Of those, 6 percent scored under Advanced, compared with the state average of 20 percent, and 24 percent scored under Proficient, a much closer score to the state’s average of 30 percent. In Wareham, 37 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 26 percent; and 33 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 23 percent.
Grade 8
For English language arts, 66 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state average of 80 percent. That broke down into just 10 percent scoring at Advanced, compared with the state average of 26 percent, and 56 percent scoring at Proficient, about even with the state’s average of 54 percent. Wareham students scored at 27 percent under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 14 percent; and 8 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 6 percent.
For mathematics, 36 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with state averages of 60 percent. Of those, just 8 percent scored under Advanced, compared with the state average of 29 percent, and 29 percent scored under Proficient, a much closer score to the state’s average of 31 percent. In Wareham, 27 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 23 percent; and 37 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 17 percent.
For science and technology/engineering, Wareham scored 30 percent scoring at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state’s score of 42 percent. That broke down into no students scoring at Advanced in in Wareham, compared with 3 percent across the state, and 30 percent in Wareham compared with 39 percent across the state in Proficient scores. Under Needs Improvement, Wareham scored 49 percent, compared with the state’s 40 percent; and 21 percent compared with the state’s 18 percent under Warning/Failing.
Grade 10
For English language arts, 84 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state average of 91 percent. That broke down into 28 percent scoring at Advanced, compared with the state average of 49 percent, and 57 percent scoring at Proficient, distinctly over the state average of 42 percent. Wareham students scored at 11 percent under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 6 percent; and 5 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 3 percent.
For mathematics, 63 percent of students scored at Proficient or Higher, compared with state averages of 79 percent. Of those, 25 percent scored under Advanced, compared with the state average of 53 percent, and 38 percent scored under Proficient, with the state’s average at 25 percent. In Wareham, 25 percent of students scored under Needs Improvement, compared with the state average of 13 percent; and 12 percent scored under Warning/Failing, compared with the state’s 8 percent.
For science and technology/engineering, Wareham scored just 29 percent scoring at Proficient or Higher, compared with the state’s score of 72 percent. That broke down into 9 percent scoring at Advanced in in Wareham, compared with 27 percent across the state, and 20 percent in Wareham compared with 44 percent across the state in Proficient scores. Under Needs Improvement, Wareham scored 61 percent, compared with the state’s 23 percent; and 10 percent compared with the state’s 5 percent under Warning/Failing.
All Students
For English language arts and reading, Wareham scored at 54 percent in Proficient or Higher, with 8 percent scoring Advanced, and 45 percent scoring Proficient. Under Needs Improvement, Wareham scored 34 percent, and 13 percent under Warning/Failing.
For mathematics, Wareham scored at 43 percent in Proficient or Higher, with 13 percent scoring Advanced, and 30 percent scoring Proficient. Under Needs Improvement, Wareham scored 32 percent, and 25 percent under Warning/Failing.
For science and technology/engineering, Wareham scored at 38 percent in Proficient or Higher, with 6 percent scoring Advanced, and 31 percent scoring Proficient. Under Needs Improvement, Wareham scored 46 percent, and 16 percent under Warning/Failing.
