Middle School students win community Scarecrow Contest
Some Wareham Middle School students are being recognized by two community organizations for their community service.
On Friday afternoon, roughly 20 special education students enjoyed a pizza party at the school sponsored by the Onset Bay Association and the Wareham Village Association. The reason for the pizza—the three scare crows created by the group won the Scare Crow contest recently held by the two associations.
“They showed the most community spirit,” said Onset Bay Association President Eleanor Martin, who said the students scarecrows beat out a field of about 15 entries.”
“We are so honored and proud to get to know you,” said Tracy McGraw, Vice President of the Wareham Village Association. “You are the future of the town—we thank you so much for taking part in the event.”
In the event, contestants are required to create hand-made scarecrows, and display them in either Wareham Village or Onset Village. The students chose to display their creations at the bench on Main Street near Pezzoli Square.
Teacher Katherine Frain said the students chose to base their three scarecrows off of superheroes they created that depicted “gritty” characters that are adept to overcoming obstacles.
“They combat laziness and negativity with their gritty-ness, which is something we focus on,” said Frain.
Frain along with fellow teacher Kathleen Braley and guidance counselor Allison Rossi helped the students with the contest, which ran through the month of October and into November.
“It took us like five years to make the scarecrows,” said student Brenden James Medeiros, “but it was OK.”
“Making the scarecrows was a lot of fun,” added student Chris Costa.
Martin said a portion of the pizza from the event was donated by Marc Anthony’s in Onset.
McGraw said she hopes the work of the middle school students can influence others their age to get out and take part in community events.
“I hope it inspires other students at the school to take part as well,” said McGraw.
