"Be respectful, responsible, cooperative and a striking Viking."

It's a motto the students at Wareham Middle School try to embody, and they'll be reminded of it in every classroom thanks to the artwork of seventh-grader Jasmine Black.

Black recently won a school-wide poster contest where students were asked to create a piece of art that represented that motto, which is the slogan for the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support program implemented at Wareham Middle School last year.

"The goal is to reward students whenever they are respectful, responsible and cooperative," said art teacher Andrea Barrett. "We want them to develop these characteristics before they get to the High School."

When teachers see students employ these characteristics they given rewards, such as having extra time to complete an assignment or extra time to use the computers.

School officials devised a contest for students to create a poster that captured that theme and out of 30 entrants, Black's was chosen as the best and will be reproduced in every classroom in the school.

"I was surprised, I didn't think I was going to win," said Black. She said when it was announced over the loudspeaker her whole homeroom was clapping for her.

"She's an exceptional artist," Barrett said of Black.

Barrett chose the final three best posters and then Middle School Principal Dan Minkle chose Black as the winner.

"I had to hold it in, I really I wanted to tell her," Barrett said.

Black said it took her about two and a half hours to complete the poster. She used the school colors for the words and drew the school's Viking logo freehand.

"Most people know that I like to draw and my friends have me draw their names in different letters," Black said.

"There are not enough wonderful words I could say about Jasmine," Barrett said. "Other students are always looking at Jasmine for inspiration and examples on assignments."

Now, thanks to her artwork, students throughout the school will look to her artwork for inspiration on how to be a better person.
