Needleworkers donate handmade winter clothes, blankets to Turning Point
Hand-crafted slippers, hats, mittens and baby blankets will make their way into the Wareham community this winter, thanks to donations from needleworkers.
Michaels sponsors a yearly Warm Up America program, inviting people to donate knitted and crocheted items to go to people in need. This year was the third year Michaels in Wareham was accepting these donations, which go to Turning Point Day Resource Center.
Turning Point is an all-volunteer social service agency that provides housing assistance, heat and utility bill assistance, access to emergency food and clothing, baby items and employment information to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
Around seven blankets and lots of handmade winter clothing and accessories were donated on Friday. Many came from crafters who take classes at Michaels on the first Friday of the month. On that day, people are welcome to come craft and receive help from 3 to 8 p.m. for free. Yarn is supplied at the classes by Michaels.
“More hands are always needed to help,” said Wanda Blair, the certified yarn instructor for Michaels. If people don’t know how to knit or crochet, they can attend the class and Blair will work with them to learn the skill.
The warm winter clothes will be available at Turning Point and Baby Point, open the third Thursday of the month. Baby Point serves 40 to 50 babies a month and provides parents with a free package of diapers. They also have a table of donated items available for people to take for their children. Turning Point is also making Christmas bundles of gifts, so some of the items will be included in those packages.
Donations of unwanted yarn or knitted and crocheted items can be dropped off at the register at Michaels at any time.
“There’s such a need in this community,” said Susan Boyarski, who is on the Turning Point board. Turning Point serves Rochester, Middleborough, Carver, Wareham and Onset.
